Guest Speakers on Tuesday, March 19th will be Heather Hardy, WBC Female Featherweight Champion & Carlos Ortiz, Jr., the new IBF Championship Committee Chairman

 

 

The Ring 8 VBA March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 at O’Neills Rest., 64-21 53rd Drive, Maspeth, NY 11378

Our special Guest Speakers this month will be Heather Hardy, WBC Female Featherweight Champion and Carlos Ortiz Jr., former NYSAC Judge and now IBF Champions Committee Chairman.

                             Heather “The Heat” Hardy

Heather “The Heat Hardy, 22 (4 Ko’s)-0-0 got started in Boxing around 2010 and by 2011, won a metro Featherweight. Amateur title. In 2012 she won the NY Golden Gloves Female Featherweight title. Her love for boxing intensified and continued to work hard training in Gleason’s Gym.She turned pro later in 2012 and never looked back. In 2013 she won the UBF Intl. Female Super Bantamweight. Title with a 2nd Rd. TKO over Ana Laura Gomez. She then faced Crystal Hoy for the WBC Intl. Female Super Bantamweight Title and won in a 10 Rd MD in 2014. Heather defended that title twice before moving up to Featherweight in 2016. Her first fight as a Featherweight she faced Shelly Vincent and won the WBC Intl Female Featherweight title. She has defended that title 3 times since, 2 victories over Edina Kiss and once again, in her latest fight, over Shelly Vincent on 10/ 27/2018 at MSG.

Heather must like New York, all her Boxing fights to date have been in New York metro area.
Heather also concentrates her time with Mixed Martial Arts and has been very successful in that area also. Fighting in the Bellator MMA, she is presently 2-1 and is represented by Lou DiBella promotions.
Heather has a degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College and is presently a single parent residing in Brooklyn. Most recently, last week, Ring 8 members had the pleasure of watching Heather work as trainer in the corner of a protege at a Ring 8 sponsored 2019 USA Boxing Metro Ring Masters Tournament preliminary Round in Hempstead, Long Island.. Ring 8 wishes Heather continued success in all her endeavors.

Longtime Ring 8 member, Carlos has been installed as the new IBF Championship Committee Chairman, based in New Jersey. Overseeing the arrangement of IBF Championship fights can be a daunting task, and Carlos will be on hand to tell us about his new position. Carlos has put his future HOF career on hold as a NYSAC Boxing Judge for this new position.

The former US Marine and retired NYC Police Officer, was a longtime amateur judge, and for the last 10 years, a boxing judge in the Pro ranks. With over 450 bouts scored, 45 of them were Championship bouts with the IBF, WBO, WBC, and WBA, this former Ring 8 “Boxing Official Of The Year” will be on hand to tell us about his experiences in the ring.

I would like to remind all Ring 8 members that The New York State Boxing Hall Of Fame is a short time away..Sunday April 28th at Russo’s on the Bay, Howard Beach ,Queens. (Please see our flyer on the Ring 8 web page by scrolling down). NYS BHOF President Bob Duffy says ticket sales are going well and it is expected to be another sell out.

Ring 8 VBA 2019 dues are always in order and can be paid at the meeting. Our $5 all you can eat buffett will include Corn Beef and Cabbage with other O’Neill’s delights.

USA Boxing Metro Tournament in Hempstead, Long Island Sponsored By Ring 8 VBA a Huge Success

On Sunday, February 25, 2019, USA Boxing Metro Championship-Road to The Garden held one of their regional boxing cards in Hempstead, Long Island. The event was sponsored by Ring 8 VBA. This boxing preliminary round was well attended with combatants coming in from all over the New York Metro area to compete in the tournament.
President of USA Boxing Metro Sonya Lamonakis, who oversees the tournament that brings together the finest in New York Amateur Boxing was on hand to greet members of Ring 8 this night.

Ring 8 VBA President Charlie Norkus Jr said “ Ring 8 has been supporting Amateur Boxing here in the metro New York area since its founding back in 1954. Working with Sonya and USA Boxing Metro is a great honor and a pleasure that is measured by the success that these great athletes achieve.”

A full house in the stands applauded each boxer after all their exciting fights.There were no losers on tonites card as each boxer showed their meddle in the ring. Ring 8 member Robert O’Connell stated ” All the fights were action packed, each fighter standing toe to toe till the bell sounded to halt the round. They threw everything they had, except the kitchen sink, at each other. Great fights”. Mendez Boxing, from Manhattan made a good showing as well as Brooklyn Boxing Club and locally, Westbury Boxing Gym on Post Ave. were on hand with their proteges.

All the boxers are competing to get to the Finals being held on Friday April 19, 2019 at the Hulu Theatre, Madison Square Garden 6pm start time.Tickets are on sale now. USA Boxing Metro is pleased to return to Garden this year after a few year hiatus. Every boxer knows that Madison Square Garden is the Mecca in Boxing history, and each competitor knows if they reach the Finals, they have officially “Arrived” in their Ring endeavors. Ring 8 wishes all the fighters continued success in the tournament and have strong hopes that many will continue on to compete in the National Golden Gloves Championships later this year.

Alicia Napoleon & Pat Day to speak on Thursday, February 21st – Ring 8 meeting at Plattdeutsch Park Restaurant

Ring 8 VBA will hold the next meeting on Thurs. Feb 21, 2019 at the Plattdeutsche Rest. located at 1132 Hempstead Tpk., Franklin Square, NY  11010 starting at 7pm.

–Please note date change to a Thursday due the Restaurants closure on Tuesdays.

Our guests this evening will be “2018 Ring 8 Female Fighter of the Year” Alicia Napoleon, from Lindenhurst, NY and WBC Continental Super Welterweight Pat Day from Freeport, NY

Both are making their moves in the Ring and 2019 will be big years for both.

 

Alicia “The Empress” Napoleon


Alicia Napoleon was bestowed with our “Ring 8 Female Fighter Of The Year” award this past December at Russo’s on The Bay.

This well deserving boxer grew up on Long Island and intoduced to Boxing in her late teens.
She began traing at age 18 in Manorville, NY and competed in her first Tournament at age 20.

An amateur for 9 years, she comprised a record of:

Winning 11 Amateur titles Nationally; including 2 NY Golden Glove Championships, 4 Metropolitan Championships, an Empire States Game victory, and a National Golden Gloves Title.

Alicia turned Pro in 2014 and won her first 7 fights. 

In 2016, she challenged for the WIBA and UBF Super Middlewt. Title against undefeated Tori Nelson and lost an Unanimous Dec. Alicia quickly rebounded with a UD win over Nicolett Papp at Resorts Casino in Queens.

In 2018, Alicia signed with Lou DiBella Promotions and captured the WBA Super Middlewt. Crown in a 10 Rd UD over Femke Hermans in the Barcley Center. She has one title defense UD over Hannah Rankin at the Nassau Coliseum. Her record stands at 10 (Kos)-1 awaiting her next title defense.

“Dreams do come True” she says. ” It just takes a little Blood, Sweat and Tears, and thats okay. It increases your Faith by believing in what you meant to do. Never give Up !!”.
Alicia now fights out of Lindenhurst ,Long Island and has Ring 8 in her corner supporting her career.

 

“All Day ” Pat Day

Pat got a late start in fisticuffs, but made up for lost time by becoming a NY Gold Glove Winner in 2012 at age 18. He then went on to  become USA Boxing National Champion and was alternate to Team USA in the 2012 Olympic Games.
 
Presently Pat at age 26, and sports a record of 17 (6 Kos)- 2 (1ko)-1 and is ranked 10th in the World by the WBC, and soon to be in top 10 by the IBF.
In 2017, he won the WBC Continental Super Welterweight title by defeating undefeated Eric Walker at the Nassau Coliseum. Since, he defended his title 3 times  by defeating WBC Super Welterweights Kyron Davis, Elvan Ayala and in his last defense, two weeks ago, defeated Ismal Iliev on the undercard of the Kovalev- Alvarez in Texas with a UD. Pat also took home the vacant IBC Inter-Continental Super Welterweight title that nite.
Fighting out of Freeport ,Long Island with Stablemate Seanie Monaghan, who was a guest of Ring 8 a few months ago, trainer Joe Higgins has another proven winner in his hands.

Higgins says ” this kid grew up across the street from me, he is a nice kid, a gentleman, but when he gets in the ring, he is fast, tags you real hard then moves well left and right.-A tough fighter to find and hit in the ring”

Pat resides in Freeport, Long Island and has a degree in Nutrition from Kaplan Univ. Pat says ” My education is important to me, I’m not just a Boxer”

Ring 8 VBA will be sponsoring the USA-Metro Masters Tournament on Sunday February 24, 2019 in Hempstead, Long Island in an afternoon show. Location : Hempstead Boxing, 335 Greenwich Street, Hempstead, NY 11550  Weigh-in 2pm   Boxing Show 4:30pm. Let us support USA-Metro Boxing with a nice turnout.

Also, Ring 8 supported the Northport VA Hospital by contributing to their Super Bowl Party for the VA veterans in residence. Bob Duffy has been assisting in this effort for many years to help our Veterans enjoy the day with food and refreshments for the Big Game. Thank You Bob.

Ring 8 is Proud to announce to Our membership that Henry Hascup will be Inducted into the Atlantic City Boxing HOF this coming June 23rd at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City, NY.

Henry is the President of the New Jersey Boxing HOF and our past Vice President, and is our Recording Secretary for many years.Other names to be inducted Hopkins, Witherspoon, Duran, Barkley, Ward just to name a few on this big weekend. We will have more info at this meeting.

Ring 8 Pictures & Notes of Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at O’Neill’s Restaurant

Newly elected President Charlie Norkus opened up the meeting with Paulette Balog leading us in our Flag Salute and 10 count, in memory of former Ring 8 President, Henny Wallitsch.

Former President, Bob Duffy swears in our Newly elected President Charlie Norkus and Vice President Frank Pena.

Sonya Lamonakis, talked on her career as an Amateur Boxer and as President USA Boxing Metro NY.

VP Frank Pena, introduced Nisa Rodriguez, an 8 time National Golden Glove Champion, and she talked about her career and that she will be competing soon to represent Puerto Rico in the Olympic Games.

New York State Boxing Hall of Fame President, Bob Duffy talked on the Class of 2019, that will be Inducted on Sunday, April 28th at Russo’s on the Bay.

Welcome back to all members and guests as we start off our New Year with a fight card of some of the movers and shakers in the New York Area Boxing scene. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 15th at O’Neill’s Restaurant located at 64-21 53rd Drive in Maspeth, New York starting at 7 PM.

Our guest list will include Sonya Lamonakis, President USA Boxing Metro NY, Carlos Ortiz Jr., newly named IBF Championship Comm. Chairman , and Nisa Rodriguez, 8x NY Golden Gloves Champion and Puerto Rico 2020 Olympic Team hopeful.

Sonya “ The Scholar” Lamonakis

The reigning IBO World Female Heavyweight Title holder will be on hand to tell us about her amateur Champion career-4x NY Golden Glove Champion and her Induction into the NY Golden Gloves Hall Of Fame. Born in Greece, now residing in New York City, Sonya is a 7th Grade NYC school teacher in the Rockaways, Queens. Between rounds in the ring, she is also is the presiding President of USA Boxing Metro NY Amateur Assoc. The USA Boxing Metro Tournament is set to begin in Jan/Feb  with registration for its annual tournament in which Ring 8 will participate as a sponsor of one of its fight night cards. Sonya will tell us about the tournament and it’s meaning to so many young fighters in their young careers.

Nisa Rodriguez

This 28 year old, 147 lb amateur Champion who was born in Puerto Rico and is a 8x New York Golden Gloves Champion will be with us to discuss her 2018 Central American and Caribbean Gold Medals she just won. Now living in Mott Haven, Bronx, and training in John’s Gym, she has been fighting since she was 13 years old. A amateur record at last count is 67w-7L, is an outstanding one which includes a 4x Metropolitan Champion, 2x Empire State Games, and 2x Pure Breed Champion added to her resume.

Her inspiration comes from her littlest cornerman, her 9 year old son, Emerson. Nisa is on the Puerto Rico Olympic Team and is hopeful to bring home the Gold to her home Country. She wants to inspire the thousands of youths here and abroad to realize their potential and to go for the “Gold” in their own lives. Ring 8 is in Nisa’s corner during her bouts and quests.
