Thursday, June 20th – Ring 8 meeting at Plattdeutsch Park Restaurant, Guest Speaker Al LoBianco —– Sunday, August 18th – Ring 8 Picnic

Ring 8 is proud to have Al LoBianco as our guest speaker on Thursday June 20th, 2019. Al is a active pro referee for the NYS AC and has been the third man in the ring on numerous occasions in the New York Metropolitan area and Connecticut. A well respected referee by the boxing community, he will be on hand to talk about his career and tell us what it was like growing up the son of boxing’s top referees in boxing history. Johnnie LoBianco refereed almost 30 years, and oversaw Championship matches Shavers-Ali, Folley-Ali, Duran-Buchanen, Foster-DePaula, Torres-Pastrano and many others.

One of Johnnie’s last bouts was Tyson-Gross in 1986. The legendary ref was Inducted into the New York State Boxing HOF this past April and his son, Al, accepted his Induction Belt that day.
Al is a long time resident in Suffolk County and a Proud member of Ring 8 VBA.

The Ring 8 Bd Of Directors and Membership would like to Congratulate our recording secretary and President of the New Jersey Boxing HOF, Henry Hascup on his Induction into the Atlantic City Boxing HOF this coming Sunday June 23rd at the Claridge Hotel on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. A great honor to a man who himself as Honored numerous Boxing Legends over the years in the NJ Boxing HOF. and who has given much of himself to the boxing game over that time.

Peter Wood is the author of Confessions of a Fighter—A Clenched Fist – The Boy Who Hit Back – Battling Through the Golden Gloves and —The Making of a Golden Gloves Champion, two memoirs published by Ringside Books.
Peter Wood and Renaldo Snipes, who came within an eyelash of winning the Heavyweight Championship when he dropped Larry Holmes like a sack of potatoes and when Holmes got up he ran right into to ring post.
Top Pro referee Eddie Claudio with Former Middleweight contender Johnny LoCicero, who stopped future TV Star Tony Danza in the 1st round.

Ring 8 Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21st at 7 pm located at O’Neills Rest.; 64-21 53rd Drive in Maspeth, Queens, NY 11378. We will feature two guest speakers that evening. Author and former 1971 NY Golden Gloves Finalist , Peter Woods, and long time friend of Ring 8, Top 1980’s heavyweight contender Renaldo ‘Mister” Snipes.

After being a 2x Chicago Golden Gloves Champion- 1977 Heavyweight Novice Champ and 1978 Open Champion, and later on the Chicago CYO 1978 Hvywt Champ; Renaldo turned Pro at age 22.
He made his debut in 1978. He went 22-0 and rose up the ladder of a crowded field of massive heavyweights He was known for his hard punches and his ability to take a punch and give back in return. With victories over Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and Gerrie Coetzee he found himself in a title fight versus Larry Holmes in Pittsburgh. On Nov 6th, 1981 Renaldo fought the Champion Holmes for the WBC Heavyweight Title. In the 7th round, Renaldo dropped Holmes to the canvas and after trying quickly to get up, fell face first into the ropes. At the count of 7 Holmes got to his feet and some people believe it was a long count. In the 11th Round Holmes peppered Renaldo with heavy punches causing the ref to stop the fight. After the fight, a melee broke out during the Cosell interview with Holmes in the Ring. Snipes trainer Jim Williams, carrying scissors tried to cut Renaldo gloves off, but instead caused a deep gash on his arm requiring 40 stitches.The injury caused Renaldo to miss two years in the ring rehabbing his arm.
Holmes would return to the ring in 1983 and have a big victory over Trevor Berbick. Renaldo also had title fights versus Greg Page (USBA) and Olin Norris (NABF). He also fought Scott Frank and Tim Witherspoon.
His final career numbers will show 39 Wins (22 Kos)- 8 losses and 1 draw.
“Mister” Snipes was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing HOF in 2006. He was inducted into the New York State Boxing HOF in 2017. He was also awarded the Ring 8 “Community Service ” Award for charity raising in the metropolitan area for many years. He is a long time Friend to Ring 8 and attends many of our events.

Former 1971 NY Golden Gloves Finalist and now reknown Author
Peter Wood is the author of Confessions of a Fighter—Battling Through the Golden Gloves and A Clenched Fist—The Making of a Golden Gloves Champion, two memoirs published by Ringside Books.
His first book, To Swallow a Toad, an adult novel, was a runner-up in an Ohio new-fiction competition, and later re-titled Confessions of a Fighter. Confessions was optioned for film by Steve Nicoleides, (When Harry Met Sally, Boyz n the Hood, and A Few Good Men.)
Wood’s writing credits also include a guest column in The New York Times, and articles in Commonweal, America, Ring, Boxing Illustrated, Westchester Magazine, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Proof, Boxing.com and TheSweetScience.com.
In addition, his feature article in Sporting Classics has been anthologized in its 25th Anniversary leather-bound edition featuring their 40 finest pieces of writing.
His two full-length plays, Candy Bars and Our Similarities Are Different, were produced in regional theatre in Westchester, New York. His play Freshmen was read at White Plains High School.
As an actor, Wood made his Off-Broadway debut in Kid Shamrock at The TADA Theater in 2012. In 2017, he appeared in the New York City indie film, The Expediter.
A former New York City Golden Gloves finalist in 1971, Wood was selected to represent America in international competition in Montreal, Canada. In 1976, he was asked to represent America in the Maccabean Games held in Tel Aviv, Israel.
He has been interviewed on national television, ESPN and ABC and in New York, The Aaron Braunstein Show; public radio, The Sally Jessie Raphael Show, WOR—The Joey Reynolds Show, and WFUV.
He is also a painter and has had numerous art shows in Manhattan, Easthampton, NY, and the Midwest. One of his paintings was featured in the Katonah Museum of Art.
Peter Wood was born in Manhattan in 1953. He currently lives in Mount Kisco, teaches English in White Plains, and spends summers at his home in Easthampton with his wife, Sue, and Zoe, his 19-year-old daughter.
Mr, Wood will be on hand to sign copies of his books.
Ring 8 will be selling “Ring 8” style baseball caps, DVD video “Sunnyside Garden-The history of” at the meeting.

Ring 8 VBA sadly announces the passing of longtime Ring 8 member- Tony Napoli (Tony Napp), who passed away May 5th, 2019. Funeral Arrangements pending.
