He also covered football and baseball. In 2002 he started covering boxing for the New York Post. George stated that a lot of people claim that the MMA is hurting boxing But he says it has actually made it better because boxing had to step up it’s game because of MMA.

DSC_4264_(3)_(800x521)[1]

George then talked about his new book “The Bite Fight,” where Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield. He talked first to Tyson, who was easy to get too. It took a while to get Holyfield but when he did he talked to him for 3 hours, from the very start of it until present day.

He also talked on the Referee Mills Lane and that it was Mitch Halpern, who refereed the first fight between Tyson and Holyfield who was suppose to be the referee, but Mills got the call at the last moment. Mills Lane donated 1/2 his purse to the Halpern family after he committed suicide.

After the fight there were gun shots in the Casino.

The pictures in the book came from Steve Lott and Showtime.

DSC_4276_(3)_(800x524)[1]

And at the next Ring 8 meeting Mr Duffe will introduce Patty Boom Boom who will explain how she got a good beatdown from the new IFBA World champion Eileen Olszewski in her last fight.

DSC_4254_(2)_(800x519)[1]

President Duffy responded by writing the following:

Thank you for your e mail but fyi …we introduce all fighters to speak at our meetings , especially the boxers , who will be on any up coming shows , also there was no trash talking about the upcoming bout and that there was nothing but a respect for Eileen O . Patty A is a member of Ring 8 , a paid member , and has shown up for many of our meeting , she always carries herself with dignity and grace just like many of our members If my memory serves me we was honored to have Eileen come to one of our meeting a few years ago where she displayed her belt ( when she won a title the first time ) and for the record Eileen is always invited to attend . Patty, I understand lost the fight , but that has nothing to do with Ring 8 …we support all boxers …..and I sign off saying both young ladies are great competitors, along with being wonderful people and gave the general public a great account of themselves working to put boxing in a better place ……by the way I love your e mail address …it appears that your are the king of the zero’s.

Former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, Ron Scott Stevens, and wheelchair boxer Ian Cannon will be special guest speakers this Tuesday evening (June 18, 7:00 p.m. ET) at historic Waterfront Crabhouse, in Long Island City, New York.

Recognized as an expert in the boxing industry, Stevens will discuss state athletic commissions and their obligation to appoint only qualified judges to score bouts and, of course, how to achieve that. In addition to being a highly respected and nationally known boxing commissioner, he was also a promoter, matchmaker, boxing editor and writer, and he even did some ring announcing. A person of diverse interests, Stevens is also an accomplished playwright who has written seven plays, including his most recent, “Paper Tiger.”

Cannon, a University of Hartford student, was born with cerebral palsy, however, he has inspired and motivated countless people by creating his innovative Roll with the Punches program, which provides fitness for individuals with mobility issues to improve their quality of life, overall physical fitness, independence and mental health. His program has successfully utilized boxing training techniques and methods as a tool for chair-bound people, primarily by using the basics of boxing – bag work, focus mitts, weight training and conditioning.

“Ron is a good friend and Ring 8 member,” Ring 8 president Bob Duffy said. “There have been a lot of questionable decisions lately in boxing and it’ll be interesting to hear what Ron has to say about judging in some of those fights. Ian is an inspirational and motivational speaker who was very well received by our members the last time he spoke here and we look forward to having him back with us.”

Duffy also announced that Ring 8, in association with Don Majeski and others in boxing, donated $3500 towards funeral expenses for the late, great matchmaker Johnny Bos that was forwarded to the Bos family.

DSC_0182_(6)[1]

In the main event Vinny Maddalone, 229, was outweighed by about 100 pounds against Richard Carmack, 324, and used the first two rounds to work the body against his somewhat placid opponent. Looking bulky and strong, Carmack never let his hands go.

The popular Long Island heavyweight pounded Carmack’s ample midriff with his left and targeted his head with his right. Carmack began to cover up after absorbing a hard right and finally fell into the ropes where referee Chiarantano saved him from further punishment at 2:57 of round three. Maddalone’s record improved to 37-8 (28 KOs), as Carmack’s lost for the first time as a pro and is now 12-1 (10 KOs).

After the win Vinny said that Carmack was reluctant to let his hands go, “Because he knew that I would counter everything he threw my way.” Not sure exactly why, but Carmack had a good opportunity to pick up a nice “W” but was reluctant to make the effort. I called him “placid” and that was his demeanor from the opening bell. He looked ferocious but did little to act that way.
