President Bob Duffy opened the meeting with
93 year old Carmine singing the National Anthem followed by the
10 count by Paulette Balog and John Holden in the memory of all those who recently passed on.
President Duffy talked on the recent birthday party Pinklon Thomas had for his father who turned 100 years old. Ring 8 donated a Championship Belt and the family was so happy.
Henry Hascup talked on the up-coming New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame Induction and Award Ceremonies that will take place on Thursday, November 13th at the beautiful Venetian, located at 546 River Drive, Garfield, New Jersey starting at 7:00 P.M. Tickets are priced at ONLY $85.00 per person.
A new member Michael Goldberg talked about how he got into boxing by watching someone just jumping rope and he wanted to do the same and he just fell in Love with the sport. President Duffy talked about an event this coming Saturday in which they will be renaming the street at 45th and Queens Blvd, to Sunnyside Garden Way, where Sunnyside Garden use to stand. He also talked about the Monument Ring 8 put up at that site on October 6, 2012.
Famed ring announcer and the Brooklyn Nets public address announcer Dave Diamante also talked on Sunnyside Garden. Dave talked on several boxing events that are coming up later this week where he will be doing the ring announcing.
He also talked on the running with the Bulls which took place in Spain and he ran several times, with a cigar in his mouth.

President Duffy stated that David Berlin newly appointed executive director of the New York State Athletic Commission was suppose to be our guest speaker tonight But with 3 consecutive shows this week he had to postpone his appearance until November.
Our next meeting will be at the Plattduetsche Restaurant, Franklin Square, New York on Thursday, October 16th. The guest speakers will be Sean Monahan and Bobby Cassidy Jr.
The family of the late Felix Sandoval, who was a former boxer and trainer, came up and talked about there father. A few members of his family talked on how boxing was a big part of there life because of there father, and they went to many boxing shows because of him. New York State Athletic Commissioner member Judge Edwin Torres, who also wrote “Carlito’s Way” presented the family with a plaque from Ring 8 and we had a 10 count in his memory.
President Duffy stated that Ring 8 finally has a Tax Exempt Status, which will save as $1,000’s each year.

John McKaie, who just came back from Las Vegas, after judging the Floyd Mayweather fight spoke on how he received the assignment. He stated that he did several regional & World title fights in Las Vegas in the past years and he word was out that he was being considered as one of the judges. When the list of judges first came out they spelled his name wrong and he wasn’t sure if they meant him, But after a while when he looked on the internet, his name was spelled right and he was on his way to Las Vegas. John stated that he felt relaxed and that he was more nervous in doing the smaller club shows. He stated that he scored the fight 8 rounds to 4 in favor of Mayweather and because of the point taken away his score ended up 116-111. He talked a little about the bite that Mayweather claimed he received. He also talked on the punch that rocked Mayweather at the end of the 3rd round, in which all 3 judges gave to Mayweather. He said Las Vegas is like no other place.
Our next meeting at the Crabhouse will be on Tuesday, November 18th with guest speaker David Berlin, the newly appointed executive director of the New York State Athletic Commission. Again, our October meeting will be at the Plattduetsche Restaurant, Franklin Square, New York on Thursday, October 16th. The guest speakers will be Sean Monahan and Bobby Cassidy Jr.
President Duffy then introduced many VIP’s that attended.

President Bob Duffy opened the meeting with
Danny Gant singing the National anthem followed by the 10 count by Paulette Balog and John Holden in the memory of all those who recently passed on.
President Duffy talked on the up-coming picnic in Glen Cove on July 27th.
President Duffy stated that Ring 8 gave out two $1,000 scholarships last month and also talked on several other donations that were given out by Ring 8 over the last few months.
President Duffy thanked BWAA President Jack Hirsch for supplying our guest speakers last month.
President Duffy congratulated Chris Algieri on winning the WBO Light Welterweight Title with a 12 round decision over Ruslan Provodnikov.
President Duffy talked on the up-coming unveiling of Emile Griffith’s Tombstone. Emile’s son Louis also talked on the event which will take place on Saturday, June 21st at the St. Michael Cemetery in Elmhurst, Queens starting at 10 AM. We will then have a luncheon at the Crabhouse at a cost of only $10 per person, Ring 8 will pick up the rest of the cost.
Ron Ross, the Author of the book, 9, 10 and out, the Two Lives of Emile Griffith, talked on a Opera that was based on Emile’s life. Ron talked on several of Emile’s fights, stating that Emile was the God Father for Nino Benventi’s son’s. as well as Joe Frazier’s son Marvis.
Ron talked on Emile’s fight with Armando Muniz and how Emile carried him and kept telling him to fight back the best he can. He also talked on Emile’s fight with Brian Curvis, when Brian’s wife was scared for her husband. Emile sent Brian’s wife a hat that Emile designed himself, then proceeded to beat Brian up.
Ron stated that Howie Albert and Gil Clancy were like fathers to Emile and they never needed a contract, a hand shake was good enough.
Ron also stated that Emile sung at his 40th wedding anniversary.
President Duffy introduced several VIP members of Ring 8.
President Duffy stated that Ring 8 will not have any meetings in July or August, But we will be back in September. He also stated that the October meeting will be held at the Plattduetsche Restaurant, Franklin Square, New York.
The Ring 8 Holiday Party will be on Sunday, December 14th at Russo’s on the Bay.
Dues will be going up to $35 in January.
President Duffy introduced our first guest speakers from Philadelphia, undefeated Jr. Middleweight Contender Julian Williams, and his trainer/manager Stephen Edwards. Williams stated that he had a Great time at last years Ring 8 affair and stated that his next fight will be at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn on August 19th.
He was asked about the Chris Algieri/Ruslan Provodnikov fight. Julian stated that he thought the decision could have gone either way.
Stephen Edwards talked on some of the Philadelphia gyms, which aren’t the same as they once were.
A question was asked Julian, if you could fight anyone, who would that be. He stated whoever offers the most money. Williams stated that he likes fighting at the Barclays Center. Another question was if they offered you a fight with Cotto, would you take it, his answer was YES! Another question was do you know anyone who has refused signing with Al Haymon, his answer was NO!
A question to his trainer/manager Stephen Edwards was what id Julian’s great strengths and weaknesses. He stated that he puts all his eggs in 1 basket, it’s all or nothing. He is a little hard headed, he has bad eating habits so he has trouble keeping his weight down.
He was asked about same day weigh-ins, he stated that trainers don’t like it But their should be a cap on how much weight you can gain before the fight.
Williams, who started boxing at the age of 12, is coming along very will and his goal is to become the undisputed Jr. Middleweight Champion of the World.
Another question to Williams was how does his family feel about him boxing. He stated that his mother really don’t like it But has accepted it. They also stated that he looked up to Bernard Hopkins and how boxing changed his life.
The next guest speaker was the former WBO Middleweight Champion Lonnie Bradley, who’s career was cut short because of a detached retina. Lonnie stated that he knew President Bob Duffy for about 25 years. He told Julian to stay focused and one day he can be a Champion in the ring but more important, to be a Champion outside the ring as well.
Question was asked about his toughest fight, Lonnie stated that it was early in his career when he fought Ken Wallace in a 4 rounder. He stated that by fight time Wallace out weighed him by 15 pounds. He stated that he had 2 trainers during his career. As an Amateur he had Ron Johnson and when he went pro Bobby Cassidy became his trainer.
He became a fan after watching the Muhammad Ali /Joe Frazier 3 and Sugar Ray Leonard/Wilfred Benitez fights and told everyone that he was going to be a boxer. He started when he was 18 years old by boxing in the New York Golden Gloves. He was a 3-Time New York Golden Gloves Champion and the 1992 National Golden Gloves Champion. He had between 60-70 Amateur fights losing Only 5 of those fights.
Question was asked about him fighting Roy Jones Jr. He stated that Jones was scheduled to fight Mike McCallum. McCallum wanted $1 Million But HBO Only offered $600,000, so Bradley said that he would fight Jones for $600,000, But McCallum finally excepted the offer by HBO. Lonnie also talked on Ronald “Winky”Wright.
He grew up playing several other sports including football, basketball and baseball before taking up boxing.
He talked on his manager Dave Wolf, saying that he knew his business.
Lonnie now works with kids at the Mendez Gym. Ring 8 will donate several pairs of gloves and hand wraps to the Mendez Gym.
Sparkle Lee stated that she had another place to go tonight But when she read that Lonnie Bradley was going to be our guest speaker she changed her plans. She then thanked the Bradley family for being a Big part of her life.

Annual membership dues is only $30.00 and each member is entitled to a buffet dinner at RING 8 monthly meetings,starting at 7 PM, on the third Tuesday of every month, excluding July and August. All active boxers, amateur and professional, are entitled to a complimentary RING 8 yearly membership.

President Bob Duffy opened the meeting with
Carmine singing the National Anthem followed by the 10 count by Paulette Balog and John Holden in the memory of all those who recently passed on, including Former WBA Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter and Henry Hascup’s brother Ed.
President Duffy stated that several of our members are at the IBF Convention this week and won’t be here.
President Duffy stated that as of April 13th, Ring 8 is tax exempt. It took 2-1/2 years But we finally got it.
President Duffy introduced Former World Champion Iran Brakley, who just turned 54 years old, Denise Saddler (Sandy’s daughter), Mrs. Bill Tate, Johnny Colon’s daughter Cheri, current Lightweight Mike Brooks, and Joe Dwyer, who is attending his first meeting of the year after an illness. He also introduced WBO Director Porfirio Betegon, Michael De La Rue, BWAA President Jack Hirsch, Alexis Arguello Jr., Boxing Judge John McKaie, Wheelchair Boxer Ian Cannon and Cara Castronuova who is a celebrity fitness trainer, athlete, motivation speaker, and television personality. She was featured as a head trainer on NBC’s hit “The Biggest Loser,” Season 11, where she helped propel the show to its highest ratings ever. She has been a spokesperson for Puma, and the only female spokesperson on Everlast’s extensive roster of champions. Castronuova is a former champion boxer and two-time Golden Gloves Champion.
President Duffy stated that we had 503 people attend the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame event back in March. Between both the Ring 8 and New York State Boxing Hall of Fame affairs generated a total sum of $70,000.
On Saturday June 21st, at 10:00am till 11:00am we will be unveiling the Emile Griffith Tombstone at St. Michael Cemetery in Astoria Blvd. Queens N.Y. followed by a lunching ceremony honoring the life and times of this great boxing legend, at The famous Waterfront Crabhouse, in Long Island City, Queens, N.Y. hosted by New York’s own Ring 8 Boxing Association. Everyone is welcome to come and honor & celebrate this great champion. The cost of the meal will be $10.00 dollars for each person so please come all and enjoy some great food & drinks and fun with all of the champ’s family and friends.
Sunday, July 27th Ring 8 will be having their annual picnic at Glen Cove. Tickets are ONLY $15 each, $5 for kids, up to $15, meaning if you bring 4 or more kids all you will pay is $15, kids under 10 are free.
President Duffy read a letter from Former Heavyweight Champion Pinklon Thomas, thanking Bob and Ring 8 for presenting his father a Ring 8 Championship Belt on his 100th birthday.
President Duffy also stated that the wife of Billy Backus passed away recently. She attended the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame affair in March when her husband was inducted.
WBO Director Porfirio Betegon talked about his time in boxing and praised President Duffy and Ring 8 for what they do. He also told a story on Michael Bentt.
Wheelchair Boxer Ian Cannon thanked Ring 8 and Joe Dwyer on what they did for him. He stated that Ring 8 is his New York home.
Lightweight Mike Brooks stated that he had about 60 amateur bouts and is now 11-2 as a pro.
Cara Castronuova from the“The Biggest Loser” Season 11 and a 2 time New York Golden Glove Champion talked on her career and that she plans to box as a pro. She also worked on the book on Emile Griffith that Ron Ross wrote.
Charlie Norkus, Jr., talked on Directors Alan Swyer’s documentary, “El Boxeo,” which took four years to make. Very shortly you can download the film on either the Ring 8 Web Site or their Facebook Page. You can even buy a DVD of the film, and Ring 8 will receive 25% of all sales.
“It’s a film about how boxing has become a Latino-dominated sport in the ring and in the stands,” Swyer said during a recent conversation with The Sporting Nation.
Since the 1980s with Roberto Duran, many of the top fighters in the sport are Latinos. After Duran came Hector “Macho” Camacho, the late Alexis Arguello, Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Juan Manuel Marquez and today, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., among others.
President Duffy talked on the Bill Gallo scholarship fund in which we raised several $1,000’s thanks to a few donations from our members such as Charlie Norkus, Jr. President Duffy read off letters from both scholarship winners, Dagaberto Mederos, presented by Charlie Norkus Jr. and Ray Cuadrado, presented by Bobby Bartels, both received $1,000 each.
President Duffy introduced and thanked Gabe Perillo Jr. for his support.
BWAA President Jack Hirsch talked on the recent BWAA affair in Las Vegas which had all the leading boxing celebrities attend, including Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, Bernard Hopkins, Tim Bradley, Paul Williams, Freddie Roach, Ruslan Provodnikov among others. Jack then talked about the Mayweather fight and how they gave him a seat next to the last row. He stated that he asked them for a better one But it fell on deaf ears, but he did receive several calls during the next few days apologizing.
Jack thanked Bob Duffy for all he does and then introduced our guest speaker Alexis Arguello Jr., who is a producer for CBS Sports. Alexis talked on his late father, the former 3 time division World Champion, who told Jr to get an education, his father said, I boxed so you didn’t have too. Alexis did have about 14 or 15 amateur bouts But his boxing career stopped right their. He stated that he met Muhammad Ali who was his favorite fighter outside his father. He then told a story about when his family went to Don King’s house and Don greeted them while in his underwear. Alexis Jr. stated that his family was offended so he went into Don’s pool and did something that he has kept secret until now. I think you can guess on what he did, ha, ha!
Alexis produces 1/2 hour features for CBS on all sports. John Holden asked why the news don’t cover boxing the way they once did. He stated that he tries but to no avail.
Charlie Norkus Jr., asked what fights did he attend of his father. Alexis named several fights and stated that the only time his father talked trash is when he fought Billy Costello.
Stan Janousek (professional fight name Stanley Yanachek) stated that he has a lot of DVD’s on his father.
Jack Hirsch asked Alexis about Roberto Duran. Alexis said that they got along very well except for this one time at an event, when Duran started trash talking at his father. His father was shocked, saying where is this coming from. Later he saw Duran by himself and asked him why, Duran said just in case we ever fight I people to think we don’t like each other.
President Duffy stated that when Alexis Arguello Sr., stopped Boom Boom Mancini, he went over to his father and told the senior Mancini that he should be very proud of his son, and the elder Mancini, he was.
