President Bob Duffy stated that Carmine’s wife passed away so he led us in the Flag Salute

followed by the 10 count by Paulette Balog and John Holden.

 Duffy thanked everyone for coming to the 1st meeting at O’Neill’s since the Crabhouse closed down.

Duffy introduced all the VIP members and stated that at the BWAA last year he sat with Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather. Felipe Gomez donated tickets for the up-coming Pro Show to Ring 8 and the St. John’s Home for Boys.

Ed Post showed a shirt that will be made for Ring 8 and the club will profit $5 a shirt.

BWAA will be holding their 90th Annual Awards ceremonies this Friday night, April 24th and our very own Jack Hirsch, who is also the out going President of the BWAA, will be receiving the Barney Nagler Award for Long and Meritorious Service. Jack talked about the Award he was receiving from the BWAA. He also talked about having the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame at the Commissioners office. Melvina stated that she dedicated a wall just for that.

Duffy talked on the New York State Boxing hall of Fame which takes place on Sunday, April 26th. He also named all the Committee members. He also stated that we will be honoring the families of Tony Mazzarella and Joe Dwyer, who both passed away recently. Ring 8 will also be honoring WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and his late father Jose. They will be getting the Father/Son Award.

A former boxer by the name of Jock Lewis was killed in an accident and Ring 8 will be putting up a plaque in his memory at the Westbury Boxing Gym this Thursday, April 23rd.

 Melvina Lathan, the New York Boxing Commissioner, will be receiving an Award from the Mayweather Organization in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 2nd and will attend the BIG Fight with Mayweather and Pacquiao. She talked about how it came about as they picked ONLY 3 women.

Duffy stated that starting in September all members will be charged $5 per meeting to help pay for the expenses, including the buffet. The dues per year will stay at $30.

Guest Speaker Rich Blake stated that his father use to talk about Jimmy Slattery, and that all the boxing writer loved him. When Rich’s father passed away he found tons of material on Slattery that his father had. he stated the both former Heavyweight Champions, Gene Tunney and James J. Braddock stated that Slattery was the best pure boxer they saw. Slattery was a 2 times Light Heavyweight Champion who died broke. Rich also talked about the Harry Wills/Jack Dempsey on again off agin fight, which never took place. He stated that Slattery fought on the same boxing card as Wills and the film makers showed the Slattery film instead of Wills. Rich has writen a book on Jimmy Slattery and stated that he would give a $10 discount for all Ring 8 members.

Duffy talked on the memorabilia that the Crabhouse has and what is to become of it.

O’Neill’s is going to give us some space for some pictures and memorabilia.

Frank Pena stated that the Fishing Club in Glen Cove will be showing the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight, all you want to eat,  for ONLY $10. He also stated that there running another event on May 16th and the money will go to kids for a fishing trip.

Jack Stanton, Larry’s father is boxing lawyer- talked on lawful means to own a fighter nowadays and difference between now and 80’s in owning a fighter. Costs, allegiance to fighter. Getting fights. Al Haymon owns all big named fighters and controls 90% of boxing businesses on TV including Showtime.. He has contracts with all TV except HBO. Haymon is not licensed anywhere. No promoter, mgr, owner, nothing anywhere. Is he legal, remains to be seen. But you must deal with Haymon to get BIG fights. period.

President Duffy stated that Henny Wallitsch, Tony Depippo and Tony Mazzarella were all not feeling well.

President Duffy stated that the newest member of the Board is Boxing Judge Ron McNair. Ron has been a member of Ring 8 since the early 1980’s.

President Duffy introduced some of the Award Winners from out Christmas Party that attended, including John Rohe, Brian Dubecky, Sparkle Lee, Robin Tayor and Stan Janousek.

Ring 8 will be hosting another New York Golden Glove Show on Thursday, February 5th at the Plattduetsche Restaurant, Franklin Square, New York, which will be for the Bill Gallo Scholarship Fund. The price for all Ring 8 members will be ONLY $20.

Our next meeting will also be at the Plattduetsche Restaurant on Tuesday, February 19th.

Ring 8 donated $1,000 to “Russo’s on the Bay” to benefit sick children.

Ring 8 also donated $400 each to the Glen Cove & Westbury Gym for equipment. Ring 8 also made many other donations throughout the year.

Ring 8 will have a plaque made up on behalf of Jock Lewis who was killed recently in a car crash.

Frank Pena talked on another Golden Glove Show which will be held on Thursday, February 26th.

Frank stated that their will be a total of 30 Golden Glove Shows this year. Frank stated that Ring 8 will invite all the Finalist to a Ring 8 meeting and he introduced one of his female boxers, Emily Colon, who will also be boxing in the Tournament.

President Duffy talked on longtime photographer, Tom Casino, who is in need of financial need for hospital bills which will come to over $100,000. Ring 8 is donating $500 and Ed Post the President of Spartan Sports, will also match that. President Duffy introduced several officials including John McKaie, Carlos Ortiz Jr., Robin Taylor, Ron McNair, Eddie Claudio and Sparkle Lee, who will be Inducted into the Women’s International Boxing Hall of Fame on July 11th. President Duffy also introduced New York Boxing Commissioner John Signorile. He also stated that Tom Hoover will be replacing Melvina Lathan as the Chair person.

Jack Hirsch introduced the newly elected Class of the New York Boxing Hall of Fame.

President Duffy talked on the 1st ever meeting Ring 8 had at the Plattduetsche Restaurant, Franklin Square, New York last month and reported that we gained another 47 New members. He stated that we will have 7 or 8 meetings at the Crabhouse this coming year and 2 or 3 at the Plattduetsche, with our next meeting on Tuesday, January 20th. He also stated that the Crabhouse will always be the home of Ring 8.

President Duffy reported on the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame Induction & Award Ceremonies on Thursday, November 13th. He stated that Henry Hascup runs the best State Hall of Fame affair in the nation. Charlie Norkus, who was named the NJBHOF Man of the Year, thanked Ring 8 for their support & the AD they put in the Journal and how honored he was that night. He stated that he was raised in a boxing household as his father was a high ranking heavyweight back in the 1950’s. In doing so he met many all-time Greats. He has supported the Amateur Boxing program for many years by purchasing 2 FULL tables for the Open Class Champions and their guest and also help support several trips they have taken across the country.

President Duffy talked on a Poster that was made up by his daughter wishing Chris Algieri luck in is up-coming bout with Manny Pacquiao.

President Duffy reported on the Ring 8 Holiday Party which is coming up on Sunday, December 14th at Russo’s on the Bay. He announced all the honorees and celebrities that will attend.

On Thursday, February 5th, Ring 8 will be hosting another New York Golden Glove Show at the Plattduetsche, where the proceeds go for Bill Gallo Scholarship Fund for College Students.

Ring 8 donated $400 to Westbury Boxing Gym for equipment and $340 to the Glen Cove Boxing Club for equipment as well.

President Duffy report that the New York Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies will take place at Russo’s on the Bay on Sunday, April 26th and will be sponsored by the Fight Network.

President Duffy announced the nominating Committee, including Jack Hirsch, Henry Hascup & Rom McNair. He then talked on how the process of picking the Hall of Famers. Several people had their thoughts on who should be Inducted But Henry Hascup explained that we can’t put everyone in all at the same time. Once a person passes away their in another category and it becomes a lot harder as we have dozens of nominates that are in the International Hall of Fame.

President Duffy stated that the 2015 Ring 8 picnic will take place in Massapequa Park, after having the last several picnics in Glen Cove. He thanked Frank Pena for running those affairs. Pena thanked Ring 8 for the donation to the Glen Cove Boxing Club and then introduced a female boxer who just became a New York Inspector, Wendy Sincuir.

President Duffy introduced our first guest speaker, Dr. Barry Jordan. Dr. Jordan stated that he came to a Ring 8 meeting about 20 years ago as a guest speaker. He talked about treatment for Cognitive Evaluation and that the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital donated $100,000 for seed money for retired Athletics. A proper evaluation test cost around $6,000. He started working on this as far back as 1998. He stated that many boxers spar over 40 rounds a week and that takes a toll.

The next guest speaker was Felice Centatore, who wrote a book called “Rocky Spirit”, which can be found on http://www.rockyspirit.org/. He talked on how as a 11 year old boy a lady in a store talked on a movie that she was saying was the best she ever saw, so he decided to see for himself and he fell in Love with the sport of boxing. Felice talked on the 14th round of the 1st Rocky movie and on how Rocky wouldn’t give up after Apollo Creed dropped Rocky with an uppercut. Rocky’s trainer Mickey yelled for Rocky to stay down But his other cornerman, Mike, played by Jimmy Gambina, yelled for him to get up and he did. He then stated that so many kids are in the 14th round make the wrong decisions in life and get themselves in trouble. Years later Felice decided to box himself as he was matched up with a much larger and experienced boxer, But he found Jimmy Gambina, who helped him out to the upset victory.

Felice’s sister Doreen also talked on the book and also told of a story on TV about a young 11 year old boy.
