Ring 8 Minutes and Notes, Tuesday, January 17, 2012
President Bob Duffy opened the meeting and Carmine led everyone in the National Anthem. We then had a 10 count in memory of Charley Noel and Artie Levine.
President Duffy thanked everyone that came to the Charley Noel wake last night.
President Duffy stated that we had 509 people attend our Christmas Party at Russo’s on the Bay.
January 26th, Ring 8 will be running a Golden Glove Show at the Plattduetsche Restaurant, Franklin Square, New York, and Ring 8 will be donating $2,000 to the Bill Gallo Scholarship Fund.
Frank Pena talked on another Golden Glove Show that he is running in Glen Cove on March 1st. Some of the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
President Duffy talked on the New York State Hall of Fame for Boxing, and that the 1st induction ceremonies will take place on April 1st at Russo’s on the Bay. The 1st Class being inducted is Mike Tyson, Jake LaMotta, Emile Griffith, Carmen Basilio, Mike McCallum, Carlos Ortiz, Vito Antuofermo, Riddick Bowe, Steve Acunto, Jimmy Gleen and Harold Lederman. Posthuously they will be inducting Sugar Ray Robinson, Tony Canzoneri, Benny Leonard, Gene Tunney, Ray Arcel, Gil Clancy, Nat Fleischer, Bill Gallo and Arthur Mercante Sr. Tickets are priced at $150
President Duffy stated that today is Muhammad Ali’s 70th Birthday. Jack Hirsch introduced Dr. Jerry Lynn who stated that back in 1944 his family rented an apartment to Chris Dundee. He also stated that he use to run with Angelo Dundee. Back on March 8, 1971, he went to MSG to see the Ali/Frazier fight and when Angelo was coming down to the ring with Ali, he saw Dr. Lynn and stopped to say hello and told him to stick around after the fight, which he did, and they talked to 3 o’clock in the morning.
Mark Breland talked about Ali, when Ali’s wife was hanging out at one of the Clubs and Ali himself walked in.
Harold Lederman talked on the Ali/Norton 3 fight and that he scored it 8-7 for Ali, and that he was paid $250 for that fight.
Herb Weiss also talked on Ali, as did Johnny Gonzalez, who is the Cousin of Sugar Shane Mosley.
Charlie Norkus Jr. stated that he first met Ali back in 1971at an Awards dinner. He also met him at another affait back in 1977, when Ali received the Rocky Marciano Award from the New York Downtown Athletic Club. Charlie then told a story when he was with the New York Fire Department, when one day his department was on the way to a fire when he saw Ali standing at a street corner with 2 other guys and no one else was around them. He blow the Fire Trucks horn and Ali waved back.
President Duffy introduced David Diamante, who just signed a multi-million dollar contract as the voice of the NBA Nets basketball team, but stated that boxing was still #1 with him.
Henry Hascup talked on the Fighting Belloise brothers, former World Featherweight Champion Mike Belloise, Sal Belloise and then Steve Belloise. He stated that Steve was rated in the top 10 in the world from 1940 to 1950. He stated that Steve fought Ken Overlin for the NYSAC Middleweight Championship of the World back in 1940, and Steve had the Champion down in the 6th round and most people thought Steve won, but the judges saw it the other way, as he lost a majority decision. Steve also fought Sugar Ray Robinson and he had a total of 111 fights while losing only 13. Hascup then introduced Steve’s daughter Virginia and her husband Cliff and his other daughter and the secretary of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame Stephanie Belliose.
Emile Griffith’s son Louis talked on the recent birthday party for his father and thanked Ring 8 for showing there support.
President Duffy talked on a new boxing book called BOX: The Face of Boxing by Holger Keifel.
President Duffy introduced one of our guest speakers, 3 time New York Daily News Golden Glove Champion, and the current director of the Gloves, Brian Adams. Brain talked on Ali and David Diamante. Brian stated that he has been the director of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves since 2005, and because of boxing he had traveled to almost every state in the union plus several countries as well.
Brian stated that the finals will again be at the Garden, and that will be called the Olympic Night, as he has reached out to many former Olympic boxers that have agreed to come, including the current IBF, WBA & WBO Heavyweight Champion of the World, Wladimir Klitschko.
He asked everyone to support the Amateur program and the NY Golden Glove Tournament. He stated that he starts in September to see what venues the shows can be held at. Registrations for the Gloves start right after Thanksgiving and continue until December 31st.
Brian stated that 720 boxers signed up last year, of which 88 were women. This year they even opened it up to New Jersey Boxers as well, But they still had under 600 sign-ups, of which 65 were women. They will have a total of 37 Golden Glove Shows. Brian also stated that the Outstanding Novice Boxer of the Tournament Award, will be named after 5 time New York Daily News Golden Glove Champion, as well as an Olympic Gold Medalist and a 2 time World Welterweight Champion, Mark Breland.
Brian stated that he thought the 1984 USA Olympic Boxing Team was the best ever. He also stated that we lack trainers today.
Arthur Rosenfield of OurLIC News, stated that he did an interview with Alicia Napoleon, who is a Golden Glove Female Champion, who also sung the National Anthem at our Christmas Party. You can go to the following site to see and view the interview, http://www.ourlic.com
Brian Adams stated that she signed up for the 165 pound division but there was no one in her weight class, so Alicia has dropped down to 154.
The next guest speaker was the NY LBC Chief of Officials Mike Rosario, who won the NY Golden Glove Championship 3 times, and he also won the Pennsylvania Golden Glove Title as well. Mike stated that in Amateur boxing it’s safety first. He went over the rules of Amateur boxing. How they match-up boxers by weight and experience. He went over how the officials are trained. He also stated the there were more World Champions who fought in the New York Golden Gloves, and then there were in the Olympic Games.
Frank Pena stated that every coach now needs a Red Book, the Boxers need a White Book and the Officials need a Blue Book, so they can keep track of who does what.
They also stated that years ago, boxers could box 2 or 3 times a day, but today they only can box once in a 24 hour period.
Brian Adams talked on the drug testing for the Golden Gloves and stated that since they started, they found only 1/8 of 1% tested positive.
The next guest speaker was the Vice Chair of the NY LBC, David Llorado, who oversees the assignment of the Officials. He went over the scoring system that is used in Amateur boxing, which is a lot different then Professional Boxing. He also went over what RSC and RSCH is, and that in Amateur boxing, there is no such thing as a knockout.
Mark Breland introduced his girl friend Christina, who talked about a web site that they have put out called “Outside the Ropes,” It’s for Veteran Boxers after there career is over. It shows them how to prepare for a job.
