Dear Henry,
On behalf of my family, I can’t thank you enough for the eloquent farewell you offered at my father’s funeral yesterday. Dad would have loved it! I can’t describe my feelings when you bestowed my father’s legacy upon my daughter bringing it full circle. Your words will echo in our hearts and minds forever.
My sister and I were hoping for a graveside”10 count” but understood it was preformed for Dad at the last Ring 8 meeting so we thought that was it. We were so happy to see you yesterday morning. If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, could you send me a copy of your speech so I can circulate it among friends and family who couldn’t attend?
Henry, you are priceless. Keep up the good work and keep punching!
Sincerely,
Cheri H.

Ronnie fought out of Paterson, New Jersey in the 1940’s then became a success referee and judge, before retiring in the late 1980’s. Ronald Bouse, a welterweight boxer from Paterson who competed during the World War II era, died Saturday. He was 82 and lived in Bradenton, Fla. The son of lightweight boxer Pinky Burns, Mr. Bouse was known in the ring as Ronnie Burns. He compiled a 13-11-2 record from 1943 to 1947, according to the Boxrec.com database. His bouts were in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts and New York, including one at the old Madison Square Garden. In later years he was a boxing referee and judge and covered New Jersey prizefights for Ring magazine. “He was a good guy who loved the sport of boxing and its people,” said Henry Hascup of Lodi, president of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, which inducted Mr. Bouse in 1989.

The following items were discussed: Ring 8 Board Members were proud to announce the nomination of top heavyweight contender Vinny Maddalone to the Board of Directors.

1. Regarding boxer Shamus O’Brian. Ring 8 and the Teddy Atlas Foundation are working together to correct this situation. We were told about a call from the grandson of an old time fighter named Shamus O’Brien (1910s-1920s) from Yonkers New York who fought all the greats: Benny Leonard, Mickey Walker, Rocky Kansas, KO Chaney, etc. Shamus Obrien (real name Michael Hogan) was buried with no headstone in the Yonkers cemetery. He was a great favorite in Yonkers and had well over 100 fights. We are in the process of verifying the information, and then we will work together to honor this boxer in a proper manor.

2. Ring 8 all agreed to donate to the New Jersey Association of USA Boxing (LBC). Board member Henry Hascup is the president of this organization. “One of my goals as the LBC President was to try to send as many deserving young people away to a Tournament during the summer. We have many that would like to go to the Ringside Tournament in Kansas early in August. This would be an amazing trip for them. It would show these kids from the inner-city something they never dreamed of going to, and you can help make their dream come true.”

3. Ring 8 would like to sincerely thank Referee STEVE SMOGER for being our guest speaker, and giving some insight in to being a professional Boxing Referee.

Steve Smoger is a famous American boxing referee. He works exclusively on the East Coast, and is often featured as the referee in world title or major fights taking place at East Coast venues. When Smoger is not refereeing fights, he serves as a Municipal Court Judge in Atlantic City, as well as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves.

In boxing circles, Smoger is known as being one of the most lenient referees in the sport. This liberal attitude often results in exciting fights as the action is only broken up when it is absolutely necessary.

AUCTIONED OFF was a 8 x 10 picture of Jake LaMotta and Joe Louis (signed by Jake)with authenticity paperwork.
